Inspired by journeys to Europe and India, and by the art of Henri Matisse, Canadian artist Andrée Levesque’s expressionist works unite intention and process in every brushstroke. “Looking at life through the eyes of a child, I’m aware of my influences, the wild outbursts, naive accents, and gestures ... I go against the current in an era that celebrates the ephemeral,” says Levesque.
Having studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal and at the Université du Quebec, Levesque is aware of her artistic influences, but largely forges her own path, preferring the demanding instinct and freedom of her highly original art. Levesque gradually evolved from the abstract to the figurative, revealing in each canvas a universe that creates a space-time exchange between artist and viewer. Each work is richly textured, and there is movement that invites eye and soul to connect with what the artist feels as she executes her vision. Her use of organic lines and generous, enveloping curves are vibrant and moving, unburdened by unnecessary details. She vividly contrasts opposing colors and jerky movements to express the essence of spatial harmony.
